I don't care for books that are page after page of deep thought, introspection, self-analysis. That seems to be the norm when books are written first-person. Just tell the story! Bennett -- Ready for an amazing, unforgettable mystery heroine? : Frankie Elkin, a recovering alcoholic trying to save herself by finding missing persons from long-abandoned cold cases, is one of the most amazing heroines ever to grace the pages of a mystery or thriller novel. Part Jack Reacher--traveling from city to city with little more than the clothes on her back--and part J.A. Jance's J.P. Beaumont, a middle-age detective with a drinking problem. Elkin, as a vulnerable woman alcoholic, brings some new facets to the type. She volunteers to find missing persons, paying her way by working as a server in local bars and doing her investigations during off hours. Great concept for a memorable heroine! The story is fast paced and will keep you turning pages as Elkin tries to find a missing teenage girl, then two teenage girls, before it's too late to save them. All set in a rough neighborhood in Boston. Loved this book! Keep the Kleenex handy! ( Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2021 )
• 3.0 out of 5 stars from Steven Miller -- Promising Start but ultimately disappointing : For a time while reading this novel I excitingly thought I had lucked into something special in the mystery genre and would probably be writing a five star review. The book features a truly unique, interesting, fully imagined protagonist and first person narrator, some sharp, clever, believable dialog, trenchant, seemingly accurate descriptions of the Boston neighborhood setting, a reasonably plausible, mostly well-constructed plot (at least initially) and a mostly logical, authentic depiction of investigative techniques. However, for me, about two thirds of the way into the novel things began careening off the fictional tracks and ultimately derailed entirely. The resolution, the explanation of what happened to the victims was both tortuously complicated and ludicrously, laughably unbelievable and--even worse-- the book then concludes with some artificial, tacked on, terribly cliched, made for B-movie heroics by the principal character. Angelique has been missing for eleven months. Frankie reads about the case online, and having been successful in finding fourteen previously missing persons, decides that this is the case for her. Not exactly a new set up and yet, somehow, Frankie feels like a welcome addition to this tired old trope. She hasn't got a special set of skills, she hasn't got a deadly, shadowy protector to step in when things get tough, she isn't young, she isn't pretty. She's just determined.
